Virus Protection

Why you need virus protection!

What is a computer virus? Why do you need to have antivirus software installed on your computer? Lets start with the basics.

Definition of a Computer Virus:
A program or piece of code that is loaded onto your computer without your knowledge and runs against your wishes. Viruses can also replicate themselves. All computer viruses are manmade. A simple virus that can make a copy of itself over and over again is relatively easy to produce. Even such a simple virus is dangerous because it will quickly use all available memory and bring the system to a halt. An even more dangerous type of virus is one capable of transmitting itself across networks and bypassing security systems.

Anti-virus Virus Definitions
Your antivirus software can only detect viruses it can recognise. To distinguish viruses from harmless files, it maintains a list of unique virus signatures or definitions, one for each known virus. If you don’t update your antivirus software regularly, a rapidly spreading email virus may infect your computer before your antivirus software has a definition for it. To reduce the chance of this, the trick is to update regularly, before you collect your mail.

If you only connect to the internet once a week or less, update your virus definitions file just before you download your mail.

That way you maximise the chance of catching any infected email. If you connect daily, set your antivirus software to update first thing daily, or overnight if you have an always-on connection. Alternatively, you can wait until after your next antivirus software update has occurred before checking suspicious mail.
